On 11th March 2014, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi and Mr. Brown Mahala Banda, Diocesan Secretary for the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi, signed a grant contract for the Project for Construction of School Blocks and Teacher’s Houses at Kathyuka Primary School in Mchinji District. The grant signed amount to $102, 355 (about K41, 658, 485 at present value) provided under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

Access to quality basic education among children surrounding Kathyuka Primary School in Mchinji District is a challenge. The school does not have adequate learning classrooms to accommodate all children. It has a total of 1,174 pupils against 8 classrooms. This entails that on average, about 150 children share a classroom. Children are forced to learn outside the classrooms under a tree shed. These challenges have led to increased school absenteeism and dropout rate among children. In addition to this, the school does not have adequate houses for the teachers.

After project completion incidences of school absenteeism and dropout rate will reduce and teachers will be motivated. The project will also create a better conducive learning and working environment for the learners and teachers respectively. The occasion was graced by Honourable Lucious Kanyumba, Minister of Education, Science and Technology.
